The Act

Sunday May 05, 2019
In this episode we break down the first episode of The Act, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, and premiered on March 20, 2019. The Act is a Hulu Original, and the season one finale aired on May 1, 2019. The title of the first episode is “La Maison du Bon Rêve,” which translates loosely to “Dream Home.”
As always, we take a look at the Hulu description: “The Act is a seasonal anthology series that tells startling, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder.” Thanks for the spoiler alert, guy writing the Hulu description.
We discuss some of the real-life elements of the series--including the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest--without giving away too much about the fate of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard.
In addition to our detailed breakdown of the episode, we conclude the podcast by posing the question: “Which true-crime murderer would you want to be stranded on a desert island with?”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Sunday Apr 28, 2019
In this episode we break down the pilot episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, and premiered on March 17, 2017. Following the success of the pilot (as part of Amazon’s “Pilot Season”), Amazon picked up the series for a two-season order. The first two Seasons are available now on Amazon Prime Video, and the third season is expected to premiere later in 2019.
As always, we begin by reading the series description: “Winner of 8 Emmy Awards. In 1958 New York, Midge Maisel's life is on track- husband, kids, and elegant Yom Kippur dinners in their Upper West Side apartment. But when her life takes a surprise turn, she has to quickly decide what else she's good at - and going from housewife to stand-up comic is a wild choice to everyone but her. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls).” I know this Amazon series description looks long, but try reading it at the pace that Amy Sherman-Palladino’s characters speak and it feels much shorter.
We also take a look at what a big production this is, with its lavish production and excellent dialogue. The cast is superb as well, including a stellar performance from Tony Shalhoub. At one point Mike’s excitement cannot be contained as he exclaims, “Dude, Monk is also on Amazon Prime!”
In addition to our detailed breakdown of the episode, Mike discusses his own experiences performing comedy. The conversation also addresses how the show approaches stand-up comedy, and the portrayal of comedian Lenny Bruce.

Friends is streaming on Netflix, and the pilot episode has three different titles, depending on where you look: “The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate,” “The One Where It All Began,” and “The First One.”
As always, we take a look at the Netflix description: “Love, laughter and the best friends you could ask for. Just like real life. But with really nice apartments.” And, boy, are those apartments nice.
We discuss some elements of the show’s original pitch including alternate show titles: “Insomnia Cafe,” “Friends Like Us,” and “Six of One.”

Monday Mar 11, 2019
In this episode we break down the pilot episode of Veep, which was created by Armando Iannucci, and premiered on April 22, 2012. Seasons one and two available on Amazon Prime, and all seven seasons are available with an HBO subscription. The title of the pilot episode is “Fundraiser.”
As always, we take a look at the Amazon Prime Description description: “Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the Vice President of the United States in this HBO comedy series. Season One follows her whirlwind day-to-day existence as she puts out political fires, juggles various demands and defends the interests of the chief executive.” And as we see in this episode, Vice President Selina Meyer may be setting most of those political fires herself.
We discuss some of the standout quotes from the episode, such as press secretary Mike McLintock’s damage control strategy of: “Let’s not make it the story and panic, okay? What if Tom Hanks dies?”
In addition to our detailed breakdown of the episode, we conclude the episode by highlighting some of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s other performances over the years--including the baffling Watching Ellie.
